Welcome to the Delaney Rose blog...

Delaney was born January 27, 2010 at 3:09 pm on a snowy Gunnison day. She was 14 weeks premature and weighed 1 pound 15 ounces. We survived 80 days in Grand Junction at St. Mary's NICU, and finally made it home the third week in April. We created this blog while living in GJ so that our friends and family could stay up to date on Delaney's progress. We plan to maintain the site and post when we can, so please enjoy!

Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!
We've had a busy few weeks around here. Last Wednesday, we made a trip to Grand Junction to see various doctors. Delaney's eyes are still on track, but we were extremely grateful to hear that her heart is in good shape and her blood pressure is now within normal range. For peace of mind we decided it was in our best interest to visit our NICU cardiologist and tie up one of our lingering loose ends. So for now, Delaney has a clean bill of health. If it wasn't for her small size one would never know how rough her life started.
It got bitterly cold recently which brought one of Brandon's bighorn sheep herds back to bait. This winter he and his co-workers have put forth considerable effort to trap and medicate these sheep in an effort to improve their health and increase lamb survival. Most of the sheep were caught using a drop net in January, but several animals eluded capture. The cold and snowy weather brought the sheep back to the bait site where they could be darted and treated individually. This morning they were able to dart and treat the last ewe, and she provided some unique photo opportunities. In the photos, the sheep has been given a reversal to the capture drugs and is still in a disoriented state. She was slow to leave, but finally walked up the hillside. Brandon's technician was able to take a few pictures before the animal left. It's always an amazing experience to work with wildlife, but it's equally memorable to share those experiences with your children. Our family is very fortunate.

Delaney's first birthday was certainly a big milestone for all of us. Those of you that lived through our "Delaney experience" know that we are in debt to a lot of people. In the spirit of thanks, Jennifer took Delaney's birthday as an opportunity to write an article in our community newsletter, which the editor graciously published. We received quite a bit of feedback from folks around town about the article and quite unexpectedly have made some new friends through our blog. Even more unexpected, have been the offers to contribute to the Delaney fund. Our intent wasn't to solicit donations through the newsletter; however the account is still in place. For folks that want to contribute the address is:

Delaney Rose Diamond Fund
Gunnison Savings and Loan

Thank you for your kindness.

The little tiny girl is a year old, hard to believe. She is a wonder and a daily inspiration for us. Meredith was never much on the pacifier, but all of a sudden Delaney has taken to it with gusto. We think it makes her mouth feel better with her teeth pushing through. We hate to see her become an addict, but if it makes her feel better, so it will be. As you can see, she loves to stand and will walk around the coffee table or around the kitchen chairs. She has also discovered that the cupboards actually open and that the household appliances contain treasures within.
Hopefully you've enjoyed her first year with us. We may post a little less frequently in the future, but will do our best to keep you posted. Delaney loves you all.

Winter seems to be going quick around here. When it's so cold you have to figure out ways to stay entertained and active; particularly when you have little blond girls that get cold quickly. One way to pass the time is to have an indoor bike day at your local fair ground. It's nice for Meredith and her friends to be able to put on some bike miles and actually stay warm. It's inevitable though that you need to be outside- just dress warm. Delaney loves to go outside as long as she's bundled up. Today we took a family trip down south to look for an injured cow moose without any luck. It was a good excuse to play a little in the snow on a sunny Colorado day.
Guess who has a birthday coming up in a few days?

Delaney continues to entertain us with her antics and her zest for life. She's been a little off lately which we attribute to her emerging teeth. She finally has an incisor up through the gum and when she lets us peek it almost looks like she has another one on the way as well. She's going to need them because she's clearly established herself as a carnivore. On a separate note, she's finally starting to put it all together with walking behind her walker. In just the last few days she started standing without aid and balancing for 10 or 20 seconds. Then today out of nowhere (with her sister's encouragement), she walked across the room behind her lion. Check out the video.

Oh, and Meredith got to experience her first bighorn sheep trap...
