Welcome to the Delaney Rose blog...

Delaney was born January 27, 2010 at 3:09 pm on a snowy Gunnison day. She was 14 weeks premature and weighed 1 pound 15 ounces. We survived 80 days in Grand Junction at St. Mary's NICU, and finally made it home the third week in April. We created this blog while living in GJ so that our friends and family could stay up to date on Delaney's progress. We plan to maintain the site and post when we can, so please enjoy!

DAY 6

The last six days are a blur, and we are still working on finding peace with our situation. We spend our days in and out of the hospital, and trying to keep Meredith happy and occupied. Our family rallied and was able to find us an apartment that is five minutes from Delaney. We are able to look up at her room at night from our window and send her our thoughts.

Today, the doctors removed the arterial line into her umbilical cord, and she had her first poopy diapers. This is a big deal, as she can now begin to process waste products more efficiently in her body. Blood will now be drawn from pricks to her heel (which she does not enjoy at all). They also increased her feeding regiment from three to four times a day, so hopefully Mom's milk will do her a lot of good over the next several days.

The best part of today was that Jennifer was able to snuggle little Delaney during "Kangaroo care" time. The doctors & nurses allow parents to snuggle under supervision with skin to skin contact. This was much needed time for both Mom & daughter.

  3. Dear Diamond Family,
We are thinking of you everyday and hoping that Delaney will continue to grow strong and healthy. She is lucky to have such loving parents and a big sister to be by her side. Jen - so glad you got to snuggle Delaney.

  4. Hello Diamond Family -
My heart goes out to you! You are facing an extremely difficult time.

My son, Gulliver, was born on Halloween in Gunnison 12 weeks premature and transported to St. Mary's NICU. I can attest that Delaney is in EXCELLENT hands - the St Mary's NICU staff is top notch. We were so pleased with the care that Gulliver received. He has been home for 1 month and is thriving!

Enjoy your Kangaroo Care time - there is nothing better. Delaney looks strong in the photos. I know she is going to be fine. It will just take time...

Jennifer - Hang in there. I'm so glad you can be with Delaney in GJ. Having you by her side will help her grow stronger. It DOES make a difference. But make sure you take care of yourself, too. You've been through an extraordinary experience. Give yourself time to heal so you can be there once Delaney is strong enough to have more contact with mom.

I mailed you a small package this morning, so you should receive it later this week with my contact info. Please let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do for you and your family.

We're sending good vibes to Delaney...
